Dana, Ph.D., Senior Advisor, Strategic Initiatives, Institute for Human & Machine Cognition (IHMC), and a keynote presentation by Secretary Michael J. Olivier, Louisiana Economic Development Department to discuss "the storm's" impact on commerce and economic development in Louisiana, and lessons learned and where the recovery process stands.

Learn more and register today for the free event, featuring sessions on:

  • Private Sector Strategies: Working with Local Governments in Disaster Recovery
  • Building a Stronger and Safer Economy through Collaborations, Partnerships and Coalitions
  • Enterprise Resilience: Addressing Risk Management Issues Facing Business and the Economy

The event also includes an EDA town meeting where you are invited to communicate with EDA leadership. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Sandy K. Baruah and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Benjamin Erulkar will take questions from the audience on topics related to EDA's policies and programs.

The May 16 Long Beach Symposium was a success. EDA, in partnership with its Seattle regional office, the International Economic Development Council and the National Association of Regional Councils, hosted the third of a five-part series. The symposium's theme was "Global Gateways," and focused on how the region's public and private-sector leaders are successfully connecting to the worldwide economy. An audience of approximately 300 attendees heard keynote presentations by economist Dr. John Husing, of Economics & Politics, Inc.; Mark Pisano, executive director of the Southern California Association of Governments; and David Crane, special advisor to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In addition, panels of business and economic experts discussed how infrastructure is the backbone to successful regional development; how emerging industries reflect the shift toward a knowledge-based economy; and how institutional support finances and facilitates growth. The symposium concluded with a call to action from the audience to employ the lessons-learned strategies, to encourage stakeholder engagement, and to promote regional collaboration.

Each symposium in the 2007 EDA series focuses on regional strategies, policies and best practices to create jobs and economic opportunity. Speakers include regional and national leaders from the private and public sectors. Only two symposia remain! Upcoming dates, locations and themes include:

  • Thursday, June 14, in Atlanta, Ga., on Building a Disaster-Proof Economy
  • Wednesday, September 26, a joint symposium by Denver and Chicago Regions in Kansas City, Mo., on Entrepreneurship

Visit the Symposia website for additional information regarding venues, program and online registration.

The EDA Regional Symposia have been approved for recertification credits for those possessing the CEcD designation.
