EDA's Chicago and Philadelphia regional offices will host a conference entitled, "Beyond Innovation: Partnerships and Comprehensive Strategies for Transforming our Regional Economies" at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio, May 12-14, 2008. The conference will offer economic developers from 19 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands opportunities to expand their regional development knowledge and expertise, exchange ideas and information with their peers, and meet with regional EDA staff.

The planned program includes:

• Monday, May 12: Pre-conference events include peer exchange opportunities for Economic Development Districts and University Centers and “EDA 101” an introduction to EDA’s mission and program initiatives. Conference Kick Off evening reception at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

• Tuesday, May 13: Plenary presentations by Dr. Tom Crouch, Senior Curator, National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution and Ray Leach, CEO, JumpStart, Cleveland, Ohio. Breakout panel discussions sessions on economic development topics including: Broadband, Alternative Energy, and Bio-Science and a luncheon presentation by Sandy Baruah, Assistant Secretary of EDA. Participants will have an opportunity to meet with regional EDA staff during afternoon sessions.

• Wednesday, May 14: Training for revolving loan fund managers and economic development district staff. Meetings for construction and university center grantees

Deputy Assistant Secretary Matthew Crow to Participate in a Meeting of the Department of Labor’s Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship (ACA) in Atlanta, GA: Deputy Assistant Secretary Matthew Crow will participate in a meeting of the Department of Labor’s Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship (ACA) in Atlanta, GA. The ACA is composed of approximately 30 individuals appointed by the Secretary of Labor. The membership includes 10 representatives from each of the following sectors: employers, public and labor. In addition, there is representation of non-voting members on the Committee ex-officio. The Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training is a member ex-officio. A representative of the U.S. Department of Education and Commerce are also invited to serve as non-voting members in the Committee ex-officio. Open Press.

September 9-10, 2008

EDA's Denver and Seattle regional offices will host a conference at the Sheraton Denver Hotel in Denver, Colorado on September 9-10, 2008.

The planned program includes:

• September 9: Regional economic development strategic planning

• September 10: Revolving loan fund administration and a special meeting of Native American tribes to discuss issues related to tribal economic development.
