During FY 2012, EDA awarded 25 grants totaling nearly $18 million throughout the State of California. These investments support the growth of advanced manufacturing, entrepreneurship, export development, and disaster resiliency. EDA has also continued to invest in efforts to promote the commercialization of innovation throughout the state including UC Davis, a 2012 i6 Challenge winner, and the Clean Tech Incubator in Los Angeles. EDA construction investments made in FY 2012 alone are expected to help create or retain about 4,090 jobs in California.
Investment Spotlight: EDA Investment Enables Collaboration for Innovation
Los Angeles County has experienced double digit unemployment for years, and community and business leaders have collaborated to develop strategies to diversify the economy and leverage the assets of the region’s premier institutions of higher education. Located on an entire city block in the heart of the Los Angeles Clean Tech Corridor, the Los Angeles Kretz Innovation Campus will serve as a hub for clean tech research and commercialization. Home of the Los Angeles Clean Tech Incubator, clean tech demonstration centers, R&D labs, conference facilities and workforce training facilities, the Innovation Campus will provide start-ups with direct access to state-of-the-art lab equipment, newly trained workers, and monthly research conferences and symposiums. The close proximity created by the campus environment will enable R&D professionals to enlist the help of entrepreneurs in bringing their inventions to market.
With EDA’s investment, collaboration between groundbreaking researchers will now be as easy as walking down the hall. In 2012, EDA awarded a $2.1 million grant to support the creation of the Los Angeles Kretz Innovation Campus. These funds will be used to construct two parking lots, build a solar power generation photo voltaic canopy structure, fund capital equipment for a laboratory, as well as a prototyping/training workshop in the incubator. EDA’s investment is expected to create 171 new jobs.
