During Fiscal Year 2013, EDA invested $3,929,000 in eight projects in the State of Maryland. These projects are expected to create or retain 2,243 jobs and leverage $241,000,000 in private investment, according to grantee estimates. EDA’s investments help Maryland communities achieve bottom-up, locally-defined economic development goals and strategies.

Investment Spotlight: Infrastructure to Support New Hospital
Faced with the potential closure of its local hospital, the county’s largest employer, Talbot County Council sought to position the county as the location of a new regional medical center. However, in order to compete for the new medical center, the county needed significant improvements to its infrastructure to handle the estimated one million gallons of wastewater the new facility was expected to generate daily.
In January 2013, EDA awarded $1,650,000 to Talbot County to help fund construction of a new wastewater system and pump station from Easton Wastewater System to serve the new Shore Health System's Regional Medical Center Campus. The EDA investment will help the county retain its largest employer, which currently sustains over 2,100 full-time employees.
Not only will the new infrastructure help retain the existing regional medical center and medical offices, the improved infrastructure will provide for potential expansion for future medical industry development. In addition to retaining 2,100 existing hospital jobs in the county, the hospital system anticipates adding an additional 80 new jobs over the next ten years at the expanded facility. Additionally, the county expects as many as 250 positions will be created in ancillary private sector healthcare related businesses on the regional medical campus. The private investment in the region will be immediate with the development of the regional medical center estimated at $240 million.
