Piedmont Technical College, located in Greenwood County, South Carolina, was once dependent on the many textile mills that dotted the region. While very few textile mills remain in operation, the manufacturing roots of the state and region have helped attract new industries. As modern manufacturing relies heavily on technology, advanced skills and training will be required to meet the anticipated demand.
In FY 2018, EDA awarded $1.5 million in Public Works funds to Piedmont Technical College, Inc., and the Piedmont Technical College Area Commission to assist with the construction of the Upstate Center for Manufacturing Excellence on the college campus in Greenwood, South Carolina. The Center will feature state-of-the-art equipment and resources to support the College’s advanced manufacturing workforce training programs including mechatronics, welding, and machine tool technology.
The grantees estimate that EDA’s investment will help generate 86 jobs and over $16 million in private investment. It is anticipated that the full impact of the project will include over $40 million in private investment and 215 jobs in the region.
