In April, economic development experts from across the country gathered in Denver, Colorado, for the 2023 National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) economic summit. The three-day event included presentations from Governor Jared Polis and Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Castillo. It offered attendees a series of specific workshops, including one for Indigenous communities.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) plays an important role in regional economies across the country. The United States is home to the largest total of FDI in the world, according to SelectUSA, a program of the Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, which promotes and facilitates foreign business investment in the U.S. This means year after year, that more and more businesses from across the globe are choosing to make business investments in our country.

This week, the Economic Development Administration announces an update to its Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) Content Guidelines, recommending four new or updated topics for inclusion in future CEDS. 

The Economic Development Administration (EDA) is providing support to those communities impacted by natural disasters in 2021 and 2022. On April 24, 2023, the FY23 EDA Disaster Supplemental Notice of Funding Opportunity was published at grants.gov and on eda.gov. Through this program, EDA is accepting applications from those regions impacted by Hurricanes Ian and Fiona, wildfires, flooding, and all other natural disasters (2021-2022).

Economic development and environmental conservation are becoming increasingly intertwined, as communities look for new ways to be more environmentally and economically resilient. Under the Biden-Harris Administration, new approaches to sustainable development are proving that economic growth can be achieved in ways that simultaneously reduce environmental impacts and support work to build a climate-ready nation. In fact, this Administration approaches addressing climate change as both an economic and national security imperative.

The Appalachian Climate Technologies Coalition (ACT Now Coalition) is a prime example of how regional collaboration and locally-driven economic development efforts are key components of sustainable, regional economic growth. Selected as one of twenty-one Phase 2 finalists for the American Rescue Plan’s Build Back Better Regional Challenge (BBBRC), the ACT Now Coalition is dramatically expanding on more than a decade of momentum.

This month EDA “hit the road” to discuss our programs, including two of our newest initiatives to create jobs and grow regional economies. Throughout America we are convening government officials and subject matter experts in economic and workforce development, community engagement, place-based programming, innovation, and other sectors, to share insights and suggestions to strengthen the scope of our programming and ensure we achieve the maximum impact.
