This EDA investment will support a collaborative effort between Greentown Labs and the Ion to create economic opportunity by facilitating capital access for climatetech startups led by underrepresented founders. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, Greentown Labs expanded to Houston, Texas, to support the region in energy transition. This project capitalizes on the need for jobs and economic development, especially in communities most vulnerable to the impacts of natural disasters. Greentown is located in Houston’s most prominent innovation district, which is anchored by the Ion, an iconic former retail space that has been repurposed into flexible office space and hub for entrepreneurial efforts. To accelerate energy transition efforts, Greentown Labs has been hosting a program to educate and activate investment in climate-specific technologies. Matching these trained investors with climate entrepreneurs has resulted in a community of investors and entrepreneurs with an interest in incorporating an Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Justice (EDIJ) lens into their work. EDA funding will enable the expansion of Greentown’s Investor Program into EDIJ, in partnership with the Ion, to further climate equity and resilience in Houston and empower underrepresented entrepreneurs as the city transitions from fossil fuels to a clean energy economy.
