The New Energy New York Battery Tech Hub (NENY Tech Hub), led by the State University of New York (SUNY) Binghamton, aims to bolster battery technology development and manufacturing across the entire value chain. This Tech Hub will expand on the momentum of a growing battery manufacturing cluster in the Southern Tier of New York by engaging with the state’s first battery gigafactory; the region’s 700+ small- and medium-sized manufacturers; and the nation’s first battery pilot manufacturing and development center. The NENY Tech Hub seeks to address critical gaps in the domestic battery supply chain and meet the growing demand for energy storage, a crucial part of the clean energy transition.
The NENY Tech Hub seeks to support industry growth across the entire battery supply chain by extending private-public sector partnerships necessary to forge comprehensive lab-to-market battery innovation.
This consortium’s proposal includes plans to:
- Create a state-of-the-art training and innovation center to serve as a national destination for battery workforce development programs and technology innovators;
- Establish workforce development programs to grow a scalable and replicable model of workforce development at all levels;
- Accelerate technology development and maturation by providing startup and technical assistance and expanding infrastructure capacity to build a battery testbed network, focusing on emerging industry gaps related to safety and metrology;
- Help businesses enter the battery supply chain and commercialize new product lines through capacity-building; and
- Support implementation while also ensuring meaningful regional impacts are attained through dedicated community engagement programs that actualize goals to broaden diversity, participation, and accessibility across the Hub.
To ensure that the impacts of the Tech Hub projects benefit the entire region, the consortium aims to provide access to training at multiple levels through age-, skill-, and community-specific programs. The NENY Tech Hub also intends to leverage a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Advisory Group to define strategies for asset-based community development and to build a strong network of agents, champions, and trusted community leaders.
