South Texas College’s STEM Registered Apprenticeship Program will support communities across the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas, with Hidalgo and Starr counties as its primary service area.

The program seeks to: (1) recruit employers in need of STEM apprentices; (2) recruit, enroll, and train 96 unemployed individuals in Pre-Apprenticeship Programs (PAPs); (3) place 96 PAP completers in  advanced manufacturing and robotics, broadband expansion, and built environment jobs; (4) enroll these 96 employed PAP completers in one-year Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs); and (5) ensure employers reward successful RAP completers for skill gains.

In year 1 of the project the following PAPs will be developed: CompTIA Server+ and Cisco Certified Network Administrator, Construction Superintendent, and Construction Technician. In year 2 the following PAPs and RAPs will be developed: Automation Technician, Electrical Technician, Scaffolding Technician, and Welder. The project will be administered by an Apprenticeship Navigator and by an Apprenticeship Manager.

In year 1 of the project, 48 individuals will participate in the following PAPs and RAPs: 12 in Computer Numerically Controlled Tool Programmer, 12 in CompTIA Server+ and Cisco Certified Network Administrator, 12 in Construction Superintendent, and 12 in Construction Technician. In year 2, 48 individuals will participate in the following PAPs and RAPs: 12 in Automation Technician, 12 in Electrical Technician, 12 in Scaffolding Technician, and 12 in Welder.
