U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $3.4 Million to Support Growth of Manufacturing Sector in Hornell, New York

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo announced that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $3.4 million grant to the City of Hornell Industrial Development Agency, Hornell, New York, to grow the region’s manufacturing sector by making infrastructure improvements at Shawmut Industrial Park needed to facilitate the construction of a new railcar manufacturing facility. This EDA project, to be matched with $853,625 in local funds, is expected to create 258 jobs and generate $47.2 million in private investment.

“President Biden is committed to helping grow our nation’s critical manufacturing sector to improve regional economies across the nation,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo. “This EDA investment will allow Hornell to accommodate a new railcar manufacturing operation that will bring new jobs and economic opportunities to the community.”

“The Economic Development Administration is pleased to support the City of Hornell Industrial Development Agency as they seek to expand the region’s economy,” said Dennis Alvord, Acting Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development. “This EDA investment will provide the roadway, parking, and water and sewer improvements needed to support the railcar manufacturer and other businesses.”

“I was proud to support this critical $3.4 million federal investment in Hornell IDA, which will create 250 jobs and retain hundreds more, and boost Alstom’s plan to build a new manufacturing facility, expand their Southern Tier investment, and cement their place as a train-building industry leader,” said Senator Chuck Schumer. “I’m proud to announce this alongside our great U.S. Commerce Secretary, Gina Raimondo, and say it’s full steam ahead for the City of Hornell!”

“Investing in the Southern Tier’s manufacturing industry is critically important to creating good-paying jobs and economic opportunities,” said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. “This EDA grant will enable Hornell to make substantial infrastructure investments that will spur economic growth and lay the foundation for a stronger future.”
