U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $2.4 Million to Make Roadway Infrastructure Improvement in Support of Commerce in Eastern Ohio

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced that the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $2.4 million grant to the County of Mahoning, Ohio, to support the Mahoning Avenue Industrial Corridor Upgrade project.

The project will provide roadway upgrades, bridge replacements, drainage enhancements, and other necessary improvements to better position the corridor as an attractive location for job growth and business expansion. The EDA grant, to be matched with $3 million in local funds, is expected to create or retain more than 140 jobs and generate $5 million in private investment, according to grantee estimates.

“President Biden is committed to supporting communities across the country as they work to grow their local economies,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “This EDA investment will provide the infrastructure to facilitate a safe and efficient transportation system to serve the region’s manufacturing and energy sectors.”

“The Economic Development Administration is pleased to support Mahoning County as they work to improve vital roadway infrastructure for the region,” said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Y. Castillo. “This project will enhance the primary commercial and industrial zone in Mahoning County to spur business and job growth.”

“Ohio communities face a heavy burden when they have to pay to upgrade local infrastructure,” said Senator Sherrod Brown. “Thanks to this investment, Mahoning County will be able to repair critical roadways while creating jobs and attracting new investment.”
