U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $2 Million to Increase Capacity at Port of Hood River, Oregon

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced the Department’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $2 million grant to the Port of Hood River, Oregon, for utilities and transportation infrastructure improvements.

This grant will increase the port’s capacity and boost its ability to serve regional businesses. This EDA investment, to be matched with $1.7 million in local funds, is expected to create 7 jobs and generate $390,000 in private investment, according to grantee estimates.

“The Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America agenda is jumpstarting our middle class by building out critical infrastructure here at home, creating jobs across Oregon and benefits felt by the entire country,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “This EDA investment will support growth and increased economic opportunity in Hood River County and across the region.”

“The Economic Development Administration works hand-in-hand with local communities to support their bottom-up, middle-out economic development strategies,” said Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Y. Castillo. “This strategic, place-based project in Hood River will provide critical infrastructure needed to create a stronger regional economy now and in the future.”

“I heard firsthand last month in Hood River from small businesses in the region how crucial a role the Port of Hood River plays in the Gorge economy,” said Senator Ron Wyden. “I’m gratified this federal investment will build on the port’s strengths to continue generating jobs and supporting local businesses.”

“This funding is great news for the Port of Hood River and everyone who works, lives, and recreates in the Columbia River Gorge,” said Senator Jeff Merkley. “These dollars will help unlock the potential of the Lot 1 parcel and continue the economic success of Hood River’s waterfront.”
