U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $28.5 Million in Disaster Supplemental Funding to Support Economic Development Projects in Five States
WASHINGTON –Today, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) announced $28.5 million in Disaster Supplemental funding awards to five states, which were impacted by storms and natural disasters in 2023 and 2024.
The EDA awards announced today are:
- Hurt, Virginia: $8.3 million for the construction of a new water treatment plant to support industrial development.
- Port of Grays Harbor (Aberdeen, Washington): $6.2 million for infrastructure upgrades to support the fishing, marine, and tourism sectors in the region.
- McAllen, Texas: $6 million for water, sewer and roadway infrastructure improvements at the McAllen Industrial Park to support business expansion.
- Technical College of the Lowcountry (Beaufort, South Carolina): $5.9 million for construction of a new training facility to support workforce development in the region.
- Murphy, North Carolina: $2.1 million for construction of a new flood-resilient sanitary sewer lift station to support local businesses and promote economic growth.
“The Disaster Supplemental Grant Program supports American communities recovering from major disasters and puts them on a path to exceed pre-disaster conditions,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary and Chief Operating Officer Ben Page, performing the nonexclusive duties and functions of the Assistant Secretary. “The awards we are announcing today will support job creation and economic resilience in areas hard hit by recent storms, transforming their local economies in new and vibrant ways.”
The EDA Fiscal Year 2025 Disaster Supplemental Grant Program makes approximately $1.5 billion available to support economic recovery activities in areas that received major disaster declarations because of hurricanes, wildfires, severe storms and flooding, tornadoes, and other natural disasters occurring in calendar years 2023 and 2024.
