At EDA, we believe that locally-owned strategic planning is critical to facilitating regional economic development efforts and we understand that some communities need help developing a plan and figuring out where to start their efforts. To promote effective economic development in America’s communities and regions, our Planning Program (PDF) has helped local organizations (Economic Development Districts, Indian Tribes, and other eligible areas) with long-term strategic economic development planning efforts, and helps communities undertake focused, project specific planning activities. A key component under this program is developing, maintaining, and implementing a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS).

In 2014, EDA partnered with South Carolina's Chester County Sewer District through a $2.2 million grant - matched with $1.5 million in local funds - to make sewer infrastructure upgrades needed to serve a new manufacturing plant that became the first North American manufacturing facility for the 10th largest tire company in the world.

Our University Centers are making a real difference in providing the support businesses and communities need for success. One example is the University of Missouri Kansas City’s KCSourceLink University Center program, which connects a network of over 240 entrepreneurs and small businesses in the 18-county Kansas City region to find the right business resources to start, scale or accelerate.

Institutions of higher education have extensive resources, including specialized research, outreach, technology transfer, and commercialization capabilities, as well as recognized faculty expertise and sophisticated laboratories.

EDA’s Austin Regional Office hosted its annual University Centers Showcase conference at Louisiana Tech University in March to highlight EDA-supported University Center economic development initiatives in the region.
