U.S. Department of Commerce Invests $500,000 to Support the California Citrus Industry

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) is awarding a $500,000 grant to The Regents of the University of California at Riverside, Riverside, California, to purchase new scientific equipment to support research efforts being conducted through the Citrus Clonal Protection Program (CCPP).

“We commend the University of California at Riverside and the local citrus industry for working together to advance innovations that can help drive business and job growth in the region,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary for Regional Affairs Dennis Alvord. “This advanced research facility is critical to developing and introducing new varieties of disease-resistant citrus to the California citrus market.”

The CCPP services regional citrus growers by providing them with support and services necessary to safely develop and introduce new varieties of citrus in the market. According to grantee estimates, the project is expected to create 181 jobs, retain 3,000 farming jobs and generate more than $22 million in private investment.
