U.S. EDA Collaborates with Montana State University and the University of Montana to Strengthen Montana Economy

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Commerce Department's Economic Development Administration (EDA) today announced a $122,572 grant to Montana State University and the University of Montana of Bozeman, Mont., to support the operation of a University Center economic development technical assistance program.

The University Center program provides local government and nonprofit organizations with resources to better analyze the economic needs of local communities.

"The U.S. Economic Development Administration strongly supports the innovative research and development that takes place at our nation's colleges and universities," said U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development John R. Fernandez. "This EDA grant will bring all of the resources of these institutions to bear in solving some of Montana's most pressing economic challenges."

"With this vital EDA assistance, the Montana State University, in partnership with the University of Montana, is strategically positioned to provide leadership to growing the small firms, product commercialization, and value-added agricultural endeavors that have historically provided the majority of new jobs in Montana," said Waded Cruzado, President, Montana State University.

This new EDA Investment supports the first year of a three-year award to Montana State University. Under this award, the center will provide technical assistance and applied research to Montana manufacturers and other businesses to help increase productivity, spur innovation and entrepreneurship, and increase long-term regional competitiveness and economic diversification.
